Job Description:




The SUNY Maritime College is looking to hire various Water safety Instructor(s) to assists the Community Programs. The incumbent(s) are essential in order to run the classes offered in the pool throughout the year. They will be reporting to the Waterfront/Sailing and Conference Room departments.


Job Duties and Responsibilities


  • Teach/co-teach progressive group and/or private swim lessons according to American Red Crosstandards

  • Plan and implement American Red Cross-aligned lesson plans and instruct/lead/supervise program sessions according to class schedule

  • Observe, enforce, and explain pool safety standards and facility operational rules and regulations

  • Inform participants and their parents/guardians of course completion requirements and evaluation procedures

  • Evaluate participants as they perform skills

  • Supervising participants while they are practicing course skills and providing timely, positive and corrective feedback as they learn

  • Creating a welcoming environment conducive to achieving the learning objectives

  • Adapting teaching approaches to match the experience and abilities of the participants, identifying participants who are having difficulty and developing effective strategies to help them meet course objectives

  • Resolve simple questions/concerns in matters related to swimming instruction and refer other questions/concerns to the Community Programs Coordinator

  • Completes and submits records and documentation of completed lessons to Community Programs Coordinator

  • Meet American Red Cross requirements to maintain Water Safety Instructor certification

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Aquatics Director

Required Qualifications



  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification

  • Strong communication skills with emphasis on developing relationships within the community




Preferred Qualifications



  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification

  • Experience in teaching swimming lessons to children and adults







Additional Information:





Classification/Salary Range: The anticipated hourly rate for the position is $25.00 - $50.00 per hour commensurate with experience and certifications. Review of applications will commence immediately and conclude when position is filled.
