Job Description Summary:



The Staff Chaplain provides pastoral counseling and spiritual support to patients, family members/significant others and staff throughout the hospital. Usually this involves development of a "parish" within the hospital. The chaplain actively serves as a member of an ecumenical pastoral care staff sharing in activities such as staff meetings, on call responsibilities, and providing hospital wide worship experiences.




Responsibilities And Duties:

Provides on going, hands on ministry to patients, families and staff. This ministry would include, but not limited to: counseling, prayer, sacramental ministry, response to "codes" and educating and assisting patients with advance directives.

Shares rotation of all "on-call" responsibilities as needed.

Participates as a member of hospital interdisciplinary teams and serves on both Pastoral Care department and general hospital wide committees.

Attends Pastoral Care staff meetings and retreats. 3% Supports and performs the variety of responsibilities related to the hospital decedent care program. This would include such responsibilities as: grief counseling, assisting nursing and medical staff in completing necessary paperwork. 2% Serves as contact person or liaison between local clergy, patients, families and staff. 2% Participates in policy development, strategic planning, and evaluation of and for the Pastoral Care Department. 2% Assists in responding to requests for workshops, lectures, etc. from the hospital, church and community. 1% Shares responsibilities for providing a variety of worship services as appropriate. These services may include memorial services.




Minimum Qualifications:



Master's Degree (Required)




Additional Job Description:


Degree in Theology/Human Relations from an accredited theological school, university or seminary; or four to ten years related Experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of and Experience . Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education; Ordained, licensed , vowed or endorsed by denomination. Knowledge of pastoral care and counseling skills, especially as practiced within the hospital setting. Candidates should have necessary background and meet eligibility requirements for Certification by National Association of Catholic chaplains or as a fellow by the College of Chaplains. Two years ministry Experience ; at least one year of this in the hospital setting.
