Position: Lead Electrical Inspector


Description: Join the City of Beaverton team as the Lead Electrical Inspector and play a key role in maintaining high standards for residential, commercial, and industrial properties. In this leadership position, you will be responsible for inspecting buildings to ensure compliance with all electrical codes, ordinances, standards, rules, and regulations. You will also conduct plan reviews on commercial and industrial electrical plans and specifications, ensuring that all designs meet the required standards.


We are looking for someone with a strong knowledge of safety practices related to electrical inspection, methods and materials used in the electrical trade, and state and local standards governing electrical inspections. The ideal candidate will have excellent leadership skills, the ability to communicate effectively with diverse customers and stakeholders, and experience in developing reports and maintaining accurate records.


This is a full-time, non exempt, SEIU classified position. There is one vacancy.

  • Inspect and regulate electrical systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings to ensure they meet state and local regulations. Read and interpret construction plans and product listings. Consult with builders on requirements to pass inspection.

  • Evaluate program effectiveness as part of the Building Inspection leadership team and suggest improvements.

  • Assign, schedule, and review staff work, including electrical plan reviews. Coach employees and help with performance evaluations and hiring.

  • Meet with staff, contractors, architects, engineers, and others to explain code requirements and resolve issues. Answer technical questions from the public.

  • Write inspection reports, keep accurate records, and enter results into the computer system. Track inspections, stop work orders, and expired permits. Calculate and explain permit fees.

  • Review electrical plans for multi-family residential, commercial, and industrial buildings to ensure they comply with codes. Approve electrical portions of plans.

  • Investigate code compliance issues.

  • Provide back-up coverage for other inspectors as needed.

  • Assist in preparing and monitoring the section budget. Develop work plans, timelines, and resource allocations for projects. Monitor progress to ensure objectives are met.

  • Model and coach employees on excellent customer service. Promote professional and courteous behavior.

  • Represent the building section and/or city to the public, in legal or administrative proceedings, and in other situations as required. Make presentations and provide comments and testimony.

  • Act with respect and integrity, and promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED; and

  • Three years' experience as an electrical inspector; including

  • Some experience in a lead or supervisory role; or

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.

Licensing and special requirements

  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet the city's driving standards.

  • State of Oregon General Supervising Electrician license.

  • State of Oregon A-level Electrical Inspector certification.

  • State of Oregon Inspector certification.

  • Ability to pass reference checks and license/certification verification and satisfy the requirements of a background check.

  • Ability to satisfy the requirements of a pre-employment drug screen.

Wage range: $40.79 - $54.65 hourly base wage


Inspectors may receive up to an additional 9% premium pay added to their base rate of pay, per the SEIU Collective Bargaining Agreement for possessing certain additional inspector certifications.



Starting rate will be determined depending on relevant work experience as outlined in the Equal Pay Act. New hires who meet the minimum requirements will start at step one. Higher steps may be offered to those who have additional years of directly related experience to the position within the posted wage range.
