JOB SUMMARY
The Controller is responsible for directing, coordinating and overseeing financial operations and reporting functions of the organization. This position plays a pivotal role in maintaining financial integrity, implementing financial controls and providing strategic guidance to support and enhance business growth and profitability. The Controller will be responsible for financial planning, analysis, budgeting, and compliance, while also leading a team of accounting professionals to achieve organizational goals. This position requires excellent leadership skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with senior management and other departments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Leads the preparation, review and analysis of financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with accounting standards (AICPA FRF for SME's or Income Tax Basis of Accounting).
- Collaborates with department heads and senior management to develop annual operating budgets and financial forecasts to ensure alignment with strategic goals.
- Monitors budget performance, analyses variances and provides insights to support stakeholders in decision making.
- Conducts in-depth financial analysis to assess the financial health of the organization, identifies trends, and evaluates opportunities for cost optimization, revenue enhancement, and risk mitigation.
- Establishes and maintains internal control procedures to safeguard company assets, prevent fraudulent activities, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Develops and implements financial strategies and initiatives to support corporate objectives, optimize capital allocation and drive sustainable growth and profitability.
- Coordinates tax planning strategies and ensures compliance with federal, state and local tax regulations and collaborates with tax advisors as necessary to minimize tax liabilities and optimize tax planning opportunities.
- Leads year-end activities and periodic audit or review services with independent accounting firms and governmental auditors.
- Oversees cash flow projections.
- Oversees the implementation and maintenance of financial software systems.
- Reviews and approves internally prepared financial statements and schedules, intercompany billings, journal entries and accounts receivable entries.
OTHER DUTIES
- Maintains record retention for Financial Tax Services department.
- Prepares and advises prescribed company administrative duties, personnel, communication and documentation.
- Assists with special accounting projects and initiatives as assigned by the executive team.
- Participates in cross-functional teams to address specific business challenges or opportunities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY DUTIES
- Provides leadership and direction to direct reports, including recruitment, training, and performance management.
- Sets clear expectations, goals, and priorities for team members and monitor their progress towards achieving them.
- Conducts regular one-on-one meetings with direct reports to provide feedback, support their professional development, and address any performance issues.
- Delegates tasks and responsibilities effectively, balancing workload and ensuring optimal utilization of team resources.
- Fosters a collaborative and inclusive team environment, encouraging open communication, idea sharing, and teamwork.
- Mentors and coach team members to enhance their skills, knowledge, and career growth within the company.
- Leads by example, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to the organization's values and culture.
- Handles escalated issues or conflicts within the team, providing guidance and facilitating resolution in a timely and effective manner.
- Collaborates with other departmental managers and stakeholders to ensure alignment of Talent Operations initiatives with broader organizational goals and objectives.
- Prepares performance evaluation documentation; reviews and conducts performance evaluation meetings.
- Reviews and approves associate's timecards and manages time off requests.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
- Master's degree or professional certification (e.g., CPA, CMA) preferred.
- Minimum of 6 years' experience in budgeting, financial planning, or financial analysis.
- Minimum of 3 years in a managerial or supervisory role required.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, financial management software, and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.
- Experience in the real estate industry, specifically in real estate development, property management, or construction, is highly preferred.
- Experience providing strategic financial guidance and decision support to senior leadership.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of budgeting principles, accounting principles ( AICPA FRF for SME's or Income Tax Basis of Accounting), and financial reporting standards.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and other popular computer programs is expected.
- Understanding of federal, state, and local regulations affecting financial operations.
- Comprehensive knowledge of internal control frameworks and risk management practices.
- Knowledge of audit processes and best practices.
- Strong analytical skills and proficiency in financial modelling, budgetary analysis and forecasting techniques.
- Proven experience in communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with stakeholders and executives.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Strong presentation skills for reporting financial performance to executive teams and boards.
- Ability to provide prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
- High level of attention to detail, accuracy, and integrity in handling confidential financial data and information.
- Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly and concisely to non-financial stakeholders.
