PURPOSE STATEMENT


Under the supervision of the Laboratory Director, the Laboratory Night Shift Manager maintains the overall quality of laboratory functions when the Laboratory Director is not present, most commonly overnight. Works directly with Laboratory Director to write, update and implement laboratory policies that ensure compliance with the appropriate regulatory and accreditation agencies; assists Lab Quality Analyst with testing personnel competency which includes both the testing and reporting of quality patient testing as well as the use and care of laboratory equipment; and assists the Phlebotomy Lead with phlebotomy training and competency. Able to help with Laboratory billing and coding as needed. The Night Shift Manager must be skilled in both laboratory testing and phlebotomy to act as a resource when overnight patient care problems arise. Assists laboratory leadership to prepare for inspections related to accreditation with the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). Must have a thorough knowledge of general laboratory operations, phlebotomy technique, hospital operations, and management principles.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


Provides positive leadership creating a harmonious and effective working environment, building trust to create a just culture where everyone is comfortable discussing errors or gaps in quality.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and work independently.
Monitors testing procedures to ensure that all tests are performed according to established item specifications, standard test methods, or protocols.
Understands laboratory statistics including but not limited to peer group data comparison, mean, standard deviation, Levy Jennings charts, and Westgard Rules
Documents and communicates identified issues succinctly and in a timely manner, escalating issues affecting test quality and/or patient care.
Recognizes and assesses problems, opportunities, and methods for improving existing laboratory performance.
Maintains Laboratory CLIA and CAP regulatory compliance.
Participates in testing calibration, validation, and verification activities as needed.
Evaluates analytical methods and procedures to determine how they might be improved. Assists, as needed, with updating procedures or writing new ones.
Has a working knowledge of the computer, LIS system, and any other statistical tools required to maintain quality.
Proficient in phlebotomy techniques and be able to assess patients throughout all stages of life from newborn to elderly regarding their physical and psychgological needs.
Obtains the proper training and certification in order to collect Urine DOT drug screens and Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT).
Interacts positively and cooperatively with patients, visitors, physicians, and employees ranging in age from birth to the most aged.
Collaborates effectively in a team environment.
Supports the Medical Center's Mission/Vision/Philosophy positively.
Maintains current certification with appropriate certification agency.
Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
Performs other essential duties as assigned.
Requirements:


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS


Certified MLS (MT) with appropriate credentials from ASCP, AMT, ASMT or evidence of equivalent education, experience, and proficiency
A minimum of 2 years of laboratory testing experience required.
Supervisory and/or management experience preferred.
Ability to operate and interpret results from the available laboratory instrumentation.
Ability to relate medical knowledge to test situations.
Ability to communicate well with patients, medical staff, peers and all customers.
Ability to maintain accurate records - good organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to understand Laboratory billing, CPT codes and ICD-10 for reimbursement troubleshooting.
Phlebotomy experience within the hospital setting preferred.
Be able to read, interpret and adhere to the laboratory's established policies and procedures concerning all areas of the laboratory.
Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work within the established policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the hospital/clinic.


PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS


Must be able to sit and stand, intermittent 10 to 12 hours a day.
Must be able to use standard office equipment, including the telephone and computer keyboard.
Continuously works under pressure of near 100% accuracy while meeting inflexible deadlines.
Continuously utilizes manual/bi-manual dexterity, near vision, speech, and hearing.
Frequently stands, walks, sits and utilizes eye/hand coordination and color definition.
Occasionally reaches above shoulder, regularly required to life and/or carry up to 40 lbs.
Occasionally walks on uneven surfaces.
Regular exposure to disease-carrying specimens, hazardous chemicals, electromechanical hazards, stressful workloads, deadlines to meet and interruptions to the routine.
May be required to work beyond an 8-hour day or Monday-Friday schedule in order to accomplish the quality goals of the Medical center to ensure quality patient care.
Requires good manual dexterity and visual acuity (color-blindness must be noted).
Must have good mobility in order to move about equipment and to be able to lift and move moderate weights.
May be required to sit or stand for long periods of time. Must be able to maintain concentration.
